Turn it in... it is MORE than a Plagiarism Tool

ELA has always used turnitin.com with students and today we engaged in a webinar to learn more about their advanced features. If you haven't used Turnitin, the platform is available for any teacher at Liberty High School.

Turnitin... it is MORE than a plagiarism tool!

Revision Studio
Formative side / beginning of the writing process
Feedback Studio
Summative / checking for plagiarism, and giving feedback

Below are notes taken from the session:
Take a short tour and explore Turnitin within a student sample: http://bit.ly/24QTLma

Annotation Tools:
  • Put a comment on student work by clicking anywhere on the document and using the short cut
  • Customize comments (Quick Mark) and reuse the bank throughout the student work you give feedback.
  • Highlight where you want to include comments or click anywhere in the document and select the check mark icon to use Quick Marks.
  • Locate Quick tools as short cuts on when tapping the screen or on the right side of Turnitin's workspace
  • Share your thoughts with students through voice comments
Peer Review:
  • Students turn in their draft to Turnitin where they are randomized and shared out with students within the same class
  • Teachers create open ended questions such as, "How well does the author support the thesis?" where students can preview peer work and answer the question. An assessment scale can also be visible where peers select ie: (1) Not very well ... (5) Very well according to criteria
  • Settings can be changed to allow late papers and/or if you will allow students to review without a paper submitted
Rubric:
  • Identified by the grid on the right side and is available to mark when you are assessing work
  • Create your own rubric and mark the scale
  • Share the rubric with your team
  • Connect rubrics to student work and mark as you assess. Comments are also allowed under the rubric
  • Criteria becomes part of the Quick Marks you can refer to when assessing student work
  • Score will be converted to overall points, you can over-ride if necessary
Plagiarism:
  • Allows you to match papers within the district or outside
  • Compares writing to a database to compare and shares a percentage of match with the original
  • See the original with student work side-by-side to see how students are paraphrasing
  • Control the similarity matching (quotes, source, small matches) of student writing to the original
Setting up For Success
  • Copy a class and get a new code to have your students enroll in your class
  • Attach rubrics to your new class
  • Archive old classes
  • Create a Standard Class - when you create an enrollment key, you will need to share with students
  • Create a Master Class (one class) originally designed for colleges allowing for teacher assistants and it is "pushed" to other classes. Think ie: Biology and then the sections would be Hour 1, Hour 2, Hour 3...
    • Option to convert an older class to a Master Class and push assignments to all class hours
    • Separate students by sections
    • Set a TA (think long-term sub, co-teacher, student teacher, etc)
  • Check out your assignment in student view. In the top toolbar you have the ability to toggle back and forth between instructor, administrator, student
  • Organize your students by having them logon with one account and connect different classes with individual class join codes
  • Add an assignment and revision assignments in order to allow students to be able to upload multiple copies and keep it all straight
Turnitin as Formative Feedback:
  • You can allow students to resubmit drafts. Have students check their writing in a formative situation and then resubmit their final documents.
  • ETSe allows students to see their grammar issues immediately to be able to make changes (optional settings) within an assignment
Student Progress:
  • Grade Mark Report - see students, papers, and watching trends
  • Export to spreadsheet as a class or look from student to student
  • More information to come in future webinars

Comments

  1. I began using Turnitin last year to collect all of my students' work, not just essays and it has made my life so much easier! Grading is so much more efficient and I can get feedback to them right away; students don't have to wait until I am done grading everyone's work, unless I want them to. Then I can set the post date for later. It's user friendly and eliminates the time wasted in printing and collecting and returning work.
